YOR Health: Johnny, we hear you’ve got an interesting background. Tell us a little bit about your early years.
Johnny Ly: My family came to the United States from Cambodia in 1980. Our road to get here was not an easy one, to say the least. They were lucky enough to escape the genocide and slavery from the Khmer Rouge by fleeing the country. They ran through a minefield and ended up in Thailand where the government took them in and put them in a refugee camp, where I was born.
YOR Health: There’s so much in life that we take for granted – it sounds like you never had the luxury of feeling entitled. How did your parents get settled here?
Johnny Ly: While in Thailand, my father met a journalist from The Boston Globe, who he would eventually become good friends with and who sponsored my family to come to the US. He also helped my father get a job and we eventually moved to Boston, MA. I spent the first 24 years of my life there, watching my parents struggle to make ends meet. My father started as a janitor and worked his way up to being a mail clerk at the Globe, and my mother worked in a grocery store cutting vegetables. I saw them working all the time, yet as much as they were hard working, good people, they didn’t have much to show for it.
YOR Health: How did this affect you, as a child and a young man?
Johnny Ly: Growing up, my parents always told me that they were here so I could become a doctor. So, I went to school and I wanted to help my family. Over the years, after all the challenges I saw in the family, money, and in life, I became more bitter, detached and lonely. I didn’t feel like I had a connection with anyone at all, even close family and friends. I would always wish that I could do something to change my life, to give back to my parents because I didn’t want them to work as hard as they did.
YOR Health: It sounds like you were really due for a change by this point. What happened then?
Johnny Ly: I was then introduced to a business that would change my life forever. When I saw a YOR Health presentation, it immediately made sense to me. The people I met really helped me turn my life around. The leaders at YOR Health caught me off guard by their selflessness. My first reaction was, “What are you going to get from this? What do you want from me?” Then I realized that the leaders here were truly just genuine and I was the one who had a negative view in life that needed to change.
YOR Health: It’s easy to understand your skepticism and cynical eye. There are a lot of scams or borderline scams out there. What was it that really pulled you in and turned your attitude around?
Johnny Ly: Since then, I have an incredible group of individuals that have put their agendas aside and united to build a magical Team, which I am eternally grateful for. I now have a business that provides me a lifestyle most others only dream about. Luxury and lifestyle are nice, but being able to accomplish that goal of taking care of my parents, sending them on trips, and being able to give back for all their struggles really fulfills me and makes me proud. The time freedom I have is one of the best rewards of this industry. My whole life I’ve been running around trying to get ahead. But today, through this business, I can truly enjoy each moment of my relationships.
YOR Health: It’s really a pretty amazing chain of events for you. How has it all worked out? How are you doing as of today?
Johnny Ly: I have been blessed with YOR Health, supportive parents and the best Team in the world. I have now been to places I thought I would never see, with those I love. This company has proved to me that miracles can happen and dreams do come true!!
